Book Review: "The School of Life: An Emotional Education" 4/5
“Emotional life is never done with showing us how much we might have to suffer for ‘small’ things.”
At school we learn a lot: we go through the history of our civilization, we learn how to do calculus, we understand basic biology, we use formulas for physics and then we forget all of it sooner or later. Whereas most important aspects of life are left unaddressed, the goal of The School of Life is to address them from a psychological perspective.
I used to underestimate the importance of emotions to such an extreme that questions like how do I feel? Or, how do I feel about this? Were difficult to answer and left me confused, however I am practising detecting my emotions. I was wrong to avoid the domain of feelings, as it's impossible to holistically decipher my own thoughts while ignoring emotions.
We cannot pretend that we are robots, and simply take our feelings out of the equation. Emotions are deeply embedded in our behaviour and in everything we do whether we want it or not. Being aware of what we feel benefits various aspects of our life.
Part of the material presented in the book has been discussed on their YouTube channel in the form of short videos. These animations deliver concise content and bring great educational value.
The book helps us notice a whole new universe in front of us by focusing on emotional education. It’s definitely a worthy read for anyone who would like to understand their own behaviour.
